XSIBackup-App Issue

Hello,

I am evaluating XSIBackup-App because of an issue we had with VeeamZip in our environment.  I deployed the appliance and deployed XSIBackup on the first host I'm trying to backup, then I created a job to backup one VM, but it is not working.  I get the following error when I try to run the job.

Re: XSIBackup-App Issue

You don't need to deploy anything on the hosts, just add them via the --add-host argument or use the GUI.
When you need support, please paste the full output (obfuscating your sensible data) so that we can have the details on your issue.

Are you using ESXI software RAID or any other user than root to connect to the hosts by any chance?

Re: XSIBackup-App Issue

Not using ESXi software RAID.  The VMs are currently stored on an iSCSI LUN (will be moving to an NFS export in the future) and ESXi is either installed on a hardware RAID or a single disk.  Backups are going to a Synology NAS NFS export for testing, but once fully rolled out they will go to a combination of the Synology NAS used in testing and also some TrueNAS Core NFS exports.  I have been using the GUI for testing because it is easier for me to learn, but here is the full obfuscated command line run from one VM.

xsibackup --backup "VMs (speedtest)" /mnt/XSI/nfs/ESXCORPC/ --backup-host=192.168.250.3:22 --mail-to=smccloud@donotemail.com

Although I may have made a mistake with the path to write the backup when running on the ESXi host because it doesn't have that path.  But that shouldn't cause the error I'm seeing.

Re: XSIBackup-App Issue

I have also noticed, that every time I see the error message, it skips the VMDK file.  Instead of looking in /mnt/XSI/srvs/192.168.250.3/dev/disks for the VMDK shouldn't it look in /mnt/XSI/srvs/192.168.250.3/vmfs/volumes/<datastore>/<VMName> ?

Re: XSIBackup-App Issue

You have some errors in your job:

xsibackup --backup "VMs (speedtest)" /mnt/XSI/nfs/ESXCORPC/ --backup-host=192.168.250.3:22 --mail-to=smccloud@donotemail.com

1/ An spurious space between the VMs keyword and the parenthesis
2/ You are missing the username in the --backup-host argument.

Your job should read:

xsibackup --backup "VMs(speedtest)" /mnt/XSI/nfs/ESXCORPC/ --backup-host=root@192.168.250.3:22 --mail-to=smccloud@donotemail.com

©XSIBackup reads data directly from the SCSI disks thus the path is correct, it must read:

/mnt/XSI/srvs/192.168.250.3/dev/disks

Your problem is that somehow your LUN is returning the disk three times and ©XSIBackup is concatenating it producing an inexistent file.

/mnt/XSI/srvs/192.168.250.3/dev/disks/naa.6e843b66132386236323237396630623naa.6e843b66132386236323237396630623naa.6e843b66132386236323237396630623

We can consider this to be a bug and we will be fixing it this weekend.

Gotta love typos on my part.  As for the bug fix, how do I pull the update for the appliance when I'm using the trial?  Do I need to redownload the appliance?

Re: XSIBackup-App Issue

Yes, if you are a user of the trial you need to redownload. You may extract the xsibackup binary from the new version and overwrite yours at: /home/root/.xsi/xsibackup and also at /home/root/.xsi/bin/xsibackup
