xsibackup cron job killed with no details

Good afternoon everyone!

A few days ago I'm having trouble with the scheduled cron jobs.
On several servers I have received the message below:

Destination disk format: VMFS thin-provisioned
Cloning disk '/vmfs/volumes/infra/compras-ti/compras-ti-000001.vmdk'...
Clone: 100% done.
2017-09-13T03:36:57| Excerpt
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
2017-09-13T03:36:57| Hot backup selected for VM: [cofre], will not be switched off
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
2017-09-13T03:37:00| [cofre] Info: attempting to free 3688039 mb at [ /vmfs/volumes/backup_2 ]
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Killed

Up until a few days ago the backup worked normally.
The destination datastore has 36TB and has free space.
What am I doing wrong?

Re: xsibackup cron job killed with no details

Can you offer some more details?, namely: backup job string and complete output log.

Re: xsibackup cron job killed with no details

After analyzing the target datastore, I believe that xsi is not able to delete the old backup folders. I can not find a reason for this, other servers are working normally and have identical installation.

Re: xsibackup cron job killed with no details

There are many causes that could lead to a timeout trying to delete those folders: hardware flaw, NFS options, permissions, etc...

Re: xsibackup cron job killed with no details

Thanks for replying!
I believe I found the cause of the problem, one of our coworkers was using the VMDK stored in the backup storage in an active VM, so the XSI was not able to remove the folder, which caused the timeout .
It would be interesting to have a warning about this in the log files.

Re: xsibackup cron job killed with no details

Hi,
I have similar issue with newest version used on ESXi 6.5.

[root@localhost:/vmfs/volumes/599e8685-c715c7e9-977b-0024e8378ad4] /vmfs/volumes/ds1/xsi-dir/xsibackup --backup-point="/vmfs/volumes/backups" --backup-type=running --date-dir=yes --mail-from="sgrnet.dev@gmail.com" --mail-to="l_dev@my-domain.com" --subject="[XSI] Backup - Chloe" --smtp-srv="smtp.gmail.com" --smtp-port=465 --smtp-sec=TLS --smtp-usr="sgrnet.dev@gmail.com" --smtp-pwd="xxx" --smart-info=yes

#####################################################################################
# #
# (c) XSIBACKUP-FREE 9.1.9 | Backup for (c) VMWARE ESXi Hypervisor by 33hops.com #
# #
#####################################################################################

Killed

On the other hand, the following command works OK:

[root@localhost:/vmfs/volumes/599e8685-c715c7e9-977b-0024e8378ad4] /vmfs/volumes/ds1/xsi-dir/xsibackup --backup-point="/vmfs/volumes/backups" --backup-type=running --date-dir=yes

Can anybody help?

Re: xsibackup cron job killed with no details

OK, I've found the reason. The `--smart-info=yes` caused this, after removal the script works OK.

Re: xsibackup cron job killed with no details

We'll review that module in the next main revision, it just loops and prints HD S.M.A.R.T. info though, there might be some weird unfiltered characters involved in your issue. Thank you for the feedback.

Re: xsibackup cron job killed with no details

I have this issue as well if I add --smart-info=yes  I thought smart-info used to be included in the free version, it looks like it is only the pro version now?  Also, it is trying to display that it is only available in the pro version but it is failing:

#####################################################################################
# #
# (c) XSIBACKUP-FREE 9.1.11 | Backup for (c) VMWARE ESXi Hypervisor by 33hops.com #
# #
#####################################################################################

Killed
[root@esxi3:/vmfs/volumes/a7f0ec19-f26b72ab/scripts/XsiBackup]

I found the error is that the src/smartinfo has the "xsib_shutdown" command in it, which is killing the running of the backup before starting and having a chance to email the smartinfo output (FREE: states that it is a pro function) to the user.
