Backup of suspended VMs?

Hello,

I just tried backing up a suspended VM and it didn't go quite well. The disk got cloned but there were errors.
What I notice is that the suspended state was not backed up and the backup snapshot was not removed.

Log looks like below:

Re: Backup of suspended VMs?

You have only posted part of the output log, the backup job is missing as well as the program's output header which states XSIBackup and ESXi's version, and some other useful data.

You received these errors & warnings

1 - Skipping invalid VM 'NN'
2 - Error CLDELSN1: cannot delete snapshot VM Id: NN
3 - No .nvram file found for test-vm (NN)

1 -The first error is an inner ESXi message that states there is a given VM which is not correctly registered. We have nothing to say in regards to this, as said it is an ESXi message and it's up to ESXi to define what is a correctly registered VM (or not) and output messages according to its own criteria. The message is triggered by XSIBackup querying the ESXi system, but is not produced by XSIBackup.

2 - In this case we can try to detect suspended VMs and include this state to be considered apart from a switched off VM, so that we can attend its possible particularities, like not needing snapshots to be removed.

3 - This is just a warning, you don't have to worry about it. Some VMs may not have an .nvram file.

Re: Backup of suspended VMs?

Sorry, I wanted to keep things small as the vm search output is quite big.

Thanks for the info. Anything I can do with this suspended VM backup to get it "on track"?
What about the VM itself. Can I safely delete the snapshot without it affecting my suspended state?

Thank you.

Below is the header for reference (some irrelevant info stripped):

Re: Backup of suspended VMs?

I don't see much inconvenients. The .vmdk disks are being backed up and the ESXi config was saved too. You should find out why you are getting the:

Skipping invalid VM 'NN'

messages, it could be caused by the VMs being suspended, but that makes no sense, if it was the case, that could be considered an ESXi bug. We will introduce improvements in the Pro version in next releases in regards to this, but the Free version will have to wait.

I see. What's the standard wait time?

Re: Backup of suspended VMs?

Hello again, 10 months later. Was this suspended VM backup addressed? I searched the change log for 10.3.1 nothing in it about this.

Thanks

Re: Backup of suspended VMs?

Can anyone shed some light on this issue? If and when this will be supported?

Re: Backup of suspended VMs?

We currently perform backups on suspended VMs without issue. Maybe you have a different type of problem, your log above shows, at least, one disconnected datastore.
